Yellowstone, which airs Sunday nights on the Paramount Network, has delivered stellar performances from its cast over the past five seasons, and Costner is no exception. Naturally, fans are scrambling to know if the actor plans to stick with her now that her character has had such a significant change of pace. They couldn’t be happier to hear that in a new interview, Kevin Costner made it clear he’s not sure whether Yellowstone will return for a sixth season.

Costner spoke on his future at Yellowstone during an interview with USA Today, “[John Dutton’s] heart is in the ranch, not trying to find a middle ground with people. That’s going to be problematic. There’s a street nearby that he operates.” It is not as wide as some people would like. And it won’t change.
Given Kevin Costner’s commitment to his Yellowstone role, this has left many fans to speculate whether the actor feels the same way about the show. Costner compared working on the huge ranch set to being on vacation while he would have to stay in school in his character’s new political office.
When asked about the possibility of his participation in the sixth season, Kevin Costner declined to give a concrete answer but noted that he had not originally planned to be in Yellowstone. Costner said, “I was only going to do one season, but I’ve done it several times.”
“I give everything I’m doing.”
“But the moment I feel it’s not right, I just walk away.” We have a feeling fans will be on the edge of their seats to see where John Dutton and his family find themselves when this fifth season ends, and what it means for the cast.
Kevin Costner in Yellowstone
In today’s era of prestige television, A-list actors like Kevin Costner are committing to bigger and longer projects along the lines of Yellowstone than ever. Costner explained that the most important factor in his continued growth within a role had been writing.
Hopefully, this provides respite to the millions of fans who come back every week to watch exciting installments of Dutton Ranch, especially now that several spinoffs and in-universe projects are coming, such as a little prequel. The series takes place in 1883 with real-life spouses Tim McGraw and Faith Hill and the upcoming chapter is in 1923, which will star Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as the Dutton family ancestors.
One thing’s for sure: Kevin Costner hasn’t lost his fascination for the Western genre. Whether or not he returns for an additional season of Yellowstone, he has plans to work on a series of films set in the Utah desert. Like his on-screen identity, Costner seems to have fallen in love with the open skies and vast expanses of the American West and has no plans to slow down.
